This 31-bed unit is staffed by extensively trained and experienced nurses and is equipped to provide premier post-operative care to thousands of women annually.
For easy accessibility our Newborn Nursery is located adjacent to our Labor and Delivery Unit. All nursing staff has successfully completed the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, S.T.A.B.L.E. and breastfeeding education. Our lactation consultant (IBCLC and Texas Breastfeeding Educator) is available to help you successfully begin to breastfeed and serve as your support team during your stay. We are family oriented and strive to meet your family's individual needs.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Our Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery is there to provide care to infants born who are in need of more intensive medical and nursing care than the Newborn Nursery provides. The tiniest patients; our smallest miracles at Valley Regional Medical Center are cared for in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a Level II unit that provides highly specialized care. Our 10-bed unit is staffed by a comprehensive team that includes board-certified Neonatologists and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners. All NICU and Newborn Nursery Staff are Certified Providers of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
The NICU is specially designed to support and facilitate the optimal development of its tiny patients. Breastfeeding also is strongly encouraged. A Transport Team is on 24-hour alert to handle the transfer of high-risk infants from other area hospitals. Helicopter transport for infants also is available.
Valley Regional Medical Center helps organize an annual NICU Graduation Reunion in conjunction with the March of Dimes March for Babies. The doctors, nurses, and other staff members have the opportunity to visit with the parents and babies we have cared for in our infant special care units. This reunion is a special celebration of our “smallest miracles”. Fun, Games, Prizes, and Refreshments for all!
Prenatal Classes and Breastfeeding Classes
We now offer prenatal classes in both English and Spanish. The classes provide information about the birth process, as well as what to expect at the hospital; including medical procedures and interventions. The idea is to allow and encourage both partners to acquire the skills and confidence needed to make the birth of their baby a positive experience. Our Breastfeeding class is then offered in the afternoon as part of the prenatal class. Nutrition is discussed, as well as positions for breastfeeding, and what to expect as the milk matures and baby grows. There is ample time allowed for questions. Again, we encourage the bonding that goes with breastfeeding as well as providing the best nutrition available for baby.
Big Brother/Big Sister Classes
The Big Brother/Big Sister classes are geared toward 4-8 yr olds who will soon have a new sibling. They have some attention just for themselves as they learn how special it is to be a big brother or big sister. These classes are offered in both English and Spanish, and are expected to begin in late March or early April. The children confront some issues such as jealousy, while staying positive about their new brother or sister. They get to learn, in a hands on manner just what they can do to help Mom with the new baby; such as getting a diaper, wash cloth or baby wipe. At the end of the class they get a T-shirt that announces to the world that they are a: Big Brother or Big Sister.

Valley Baptist Health System is a faith based regional health system focused on improving the lives of the people it serves by providing high quality health care and medical education throughout South Texas guided by the healing and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ.
The key to all we do at Valley Baptist is people. It is the employees, physicians and volunteers that are at the heart of healthcare at Valley Baptist-Brownsville, and this past year they have continued to be recognized for their work. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, the staff at Valley Baptist was recognized by the American Heart Association with the Triple Crown Award for the treatment of congestive heart failure, heart attack and stroke. Because 2009 was our third year to win this prestigious honor, we received the Gold Award.
If the key to all we do is our staff, the “why” to all we do are our patients. Our goals are to continually “raise the bar” and provide more services, better services, and increased patient satisfaction.
We continue to add new services and technology. In March of 2008, in conjunction with a group of physicians, we opened the new North Brownsville Ambulatory Surgery Center. This is the first and only ambulatory surgery center in Brownsville, and offers access and convenience on the north side of town. The center is located at the North Brownsville Medical Plaza, which also offers outpatient physical therapy services, a laboratory, and physician offices. A new imaging center will open there in early 2009.
We purchased a new 16-slice CT to add to the wide variety of technology offered in our imaging department, redesigned our cafeteria (now called the Parrot Café), and continued to renovate our current facilities. In May, we began our surgical suite renovation and expansion, which will be completed in 2009, and will offer more and larger suites.
Valley Baptist is committed to the communities we serve. Our faith based mission is the foundation for the growth and development of our hospital to better serve you and your loved ones.
Thank you for choosing Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville. We are very proud to be part of Valley Baptist Health System, and are committed to the communities we serve. We believe in the “voice of our customers” -- our patients, physicians, guests, volunteers and employees -- and want you to know that our vision is to provide you with the highest quality of care, outstanding service and excellent operations.
